Quantum Leap Forward in Mental Health and Healing: An Entirely New Paradigm

~ excerpt from press conference at UCLA by Dr. Colbey Forman, Dean of Beurin University

Our ideal at BU is to liberate us from the unconscious restraints of automatic conditioning. It’s a matter of going within and being empowered to make our changes. In the past, we would go without having and experiencing what brings us joy, purpose, and fulfillment.

We’re not creating good cell-mates, people who will ensnare themselves along with you as empathizers, entering into the same disempowered state as their “clients or patients” with the vain hope that if they identify, appreciate and love us in our “stuckness” enough we will be magically and inexplicably liberated. Our conditioning, habits and patterns that develop as quickly as hunger links to a ringing bell, can be changed as easily and effortlessly as changing a program folder on a computer, but that is seemingly mysterious and impossible if one has not learned how that tool operates. The mind is a tool that can serve and support us when we use choice to guide us rather than being directed by the invisible but omni-present, omni-powerful dictates of random emotional conditioning.

The time has come where we are awakening all over the world to the realization that light and shadow, art and science are merging to an undeniable common source. However, those who pioneer these new approaches will stand in the light of these understandings for some time before the majority collectively step out of the shadow of their reticence.

Einstein created a new paradigm for physics radically transforming our perspective of the outer universe while Bohrs followed close behind further, bringing radical transformation to our perception of our inner universe. Well over 70 years after these theories were in their genesis, concepts of general theory of relativity and quantum physics are beginning to trickle into the elite of the “mainstream” processed in easily assimilated form by teachers such as Gary Zukav and Deepak Chopra; leaders in a spiritual movement that is ever expanding in our current world. These heralds of a train of thought that is really, in fact, over 50 years old, harmonizes with a wisdom that is timeless and ancient.

Like physics, there are revolutionary understandings of richness and depth in the last 25 years that has paled our older approach to health and healing of the mind. We’re able to make the quantum leap in our focus from pathology to wholeness, from empathy to empowerment.

The psychological horizon no longer presents a picture of coping with our permanent “wounds” and dutifully and diligently attending to each and every one in an exchange of cathartic relish and empathic enablement. A broader horizon now stretches before us, far more vast, which encompasses the older paradigms as well as creating possibilities never before imagined.

The brilliant author, John Bradshaw, in reference to the tools of our old wound paradigm, stated a metaphor: “It’s like having lost a leg and being a one-legged skater, you’re never going to grow back a second leg, but you can sure skate around really well on that one good leg.”

Our new paradigm shift is as revolutionary a concept as the change from a flat world to a round one. Our new world view can free us from the matrix of our old limitations, expanding the picture to include new realities that would have previously been considered fantasy.

Using Dr. Bradshaw’s paradigm, we can now envision the absolute certainty that not only can the one-legged skater regrow a second leg to skate on, we now know that we can teach him to fly.

Our program at Beurin University is the outgrowth and application of these new paradigms and technologies. Our therapists are surveying new grounds and joining them to ancient ones in an endeavor to enable a global shift in human awareness, health and healing.

To educate and enlighten a new standard of heart centered healer; combining the wisdom and practices of ancient masters with our newest understandings, this is the Mission Statement of Beurin University (BU), a self-created, full accredited, new style of university that will be launching its curriculum this fall at the UCLA campus.

I first heard about this revolutionary institute geared towards the healing arts when I ran into an old acquaintance of mine while standing at the check out counter in Trader Joe’s. You must write about this and get the word out my friend insisted. “There are so many healers out there who could really benefit themselves and their community through getting a PhD in their chosen field, thereby giving their practice credibility within our society. “I definitely agreed with her that this sounded like an idea that was long over due.

The past 20 years has seen a surge of practitioners operating in a variety of fields of medicine and therapies that have become lumped together as alternative medicine What a great concept to be able to offer this community of healers a venue in which to become unified and legitimized! I went home and called up Dr. Colbey Forman, the man responsible for this brainchild, and arranged to meet with him at the Zenzu Cafe in Brentwood. During our discourse I became truly dazzled by the scope and vision of this extraordinary man.

Dr. Forman, a Professor of Behavioral Psychology, a Master in the Martial Arts, an ordained Rabbi and Kabbalist, and a Professional Seminar Speaker, is a true visionary whose list of credentials and accomplishments could fill a page. Originally started in Palestine, Israel and the U.K. in 97, the idea for Beurin University came about as a result of his recognizing the unmet need for professional training in the areas of alternative holistic medicine and psychology. Until now the only recourse for someone wishing to achieve a Doctorate Degree was through investing many years studying in the traditional modules of medicine and then exploring the newer advancements in these areas on their own.

Beurin University invites you to Live life on your terms.

It is BU’s aim to massively accelerate the learning process and provide the resources and training that have until now been unavailable solely within one program.

There are two Doctoral Programs being offered at BU. The first is in the new field of Holistic Psychology TM that encompasses Identity Integration Therapy TM and Psycho-Neural Behavioral Therapy (PNBT) TM. These choice-driven as opposed to therapist-driven techniques are innovations from the traditional approaches in that their focus is solution-oriented rather than problem-oriented. Their applications are extremely effective towards creating transformation and change and take a relatively short time to master. The entire program can be learned in as little as 2 years. Classes will begin in September and will be headed by Dr. Forman himself, a pioneer in the field of PNBT.

The second program, Complementary Medicine and Alternative Healing, offers a Technical Degree much like an M.D. or Doctor of Chiropractic as opposed to a more academic degree such as a PhD (which requires a thesis). However, Beurin University also offers a full PhD program that will assist students in sharing their advances in their particular field of healing by giving them the opportunity to have their dissertation published in book form.

Many successful careers have been launched in this manner. For the many healers out there who do not possess a Bachelors degree, the university will help applicants qualify for their Doctorate by providing credits for relevant work experiences and life activities related to any of the healing arts or sciences and will also guide and support students towards completing their undergraduate requirements.

Courses of study in this program will provide training in such disciplines as Ayurvedic Medicine, Reiki, Homeopathy, Acupressure, Reflexology, Chinese Herbology, Kundalini Yoga, Chi Kung, Feng Shui and Kabbalah Healing Angel Forms, to name just a few. Experts from around the globe are being recruited to train in these various fields. These classes are scheduled to start in January 2004.

Beurin University fulfills its vision to unify and create credibility for the healing arts and sciences through offering a wide variety of courses that merge ancient healing wisdoms with contemporary knowledge and finding the universal commonality of all these disciplines. Its goal is to produce a community of healers that are skillfully trained in the broadest range of healing technologies available anywhere in the world and to move these philosophies to become mainstream.

It was 1982, and my fellow Tae Kwon Do student Steve Waldenburg sat, watching our classmate, Ko, with amazement. Steve shook his head. “He’ll bounce into a wall any minute now.”

Ko jumped into a straight-legged, flying front kick and gently folded to a graceful shoulder roll, then stood up to face the center of the Dojo. With a slow, reverent bow, hands perfectly positioned, Ko saluted the master, two other instructors, and the class. Ko was testing for his red belt in Tae Kwon Do. Upon completion of the test, we all scored him top marks. The master, Kwon, scored him nine out of ten. “Ko has an advantage over the other students,” the master whispered. “He sees deeper and will progress more quickly.”

What made the scene remarkable was that Ko had been blind for four years because of a car accident. I was 17 at the time of his test, and only sensed what the master so clearly observed: that there is an inner world of strength that cannot be glimpsed through common sight. Ko was already familiar with this inner world; its landscapes were not foreign to him as they were to the other, fully sighted students.

As a practitioner of martial arts for more than 30 years, and as a therapist and teacher of transformative and healing arts, I have witnessed the special presence of the differently abled among us as one of healing and enlightenment. Every encounter I have had with people from this vast community has enriched my training and my sense of mission.

The Jewish sages teach us that we find true strength only through mastery of ourselves. One who has conquered himself is said to be more valiant than one who can conquer an entire city. The way of the Jewish sages and that of practitioners of the Tao Te Ching are very similar. Both paths help people to understand that the true conquest of obstacles must happen internally before it can happen externally.

Ko himself told me that the loss of his vision forced the opening of his true sight. My students who have faced physical challenges have often had to marshal their courage, inner determination and will just to meet life’s daily challenges. They have learned to face their dragons, align with them, and channel that energy to empower their journey rather than hinder it. Ko showed me that, even when God seems to close some doors for us, other gifts and portals of perception are opened.

Another example of this phenomenon was the late Dr. Milton H. Erickson. A psychologist and healer, Erickson was widely regarded during his lifetime for his talent as a clinical hypnotist. Erickson displayed the remarkable ability of bonding instantly with those he met and leading patients quickly into a complete, deep trance. He credited his mental gifts to a variety of disabilities, including physical weakness resulting from being twice stricken with polio. Because he was restricted in his movements, he was able to observe human dynamics more subtle than most people would detect and use this skill in his work to help others. Erickson’s bouts with polio may have limited his access to physical expression, but it opened a portal of possibility that even today is changing the way some therapists approach the human psyche.

People like Ko and Erickson are masters in the true sense, those we call “Sensei” in the martial art traditions or “Tsaddikim” in the Jewish mystic path. They show us that what we have in common as human beings is the constant striving for excellence in the application of our deepest human traits, such as courage, love and determination. I look forward to the day when our eyes will be opened and our ears attentive to not just the plight, but more importantly the might, and the very special light coming from the world of the differently abled.

Dr. Colbey Forman is the founder of Beurin University and the co-founder of the California Institute and Center for Wholeness.
